English: Haile Sand Fort. Haile Sand Fort and Bull Sand Fort beyond, seen from the beach at Humberston Fitties. These two hexagonal sand forts were built in 1915 as a defence for the Humber Estuary using concrete and reinforced steel armour. The largest is Bull Sand Fort which stands 50 foot above sea level on a sandbank in the middle of the river towards Spurn Head, Haile Sand Fort is nearer and smaller. They remained in use until 1956 and are now privately owned http://www.ecastles.co.uk/sands.html . |
