Summary

Description

This very old building in Istanbul has been a disputed symbol between Christianity and Islam for centuries - it was built as a Greek Orthodox Cathedral in 537AD but was turned into a mosque after the city was conquered by the Ottomans in 1453.

After the fall of the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, Turkey's founding father Mustafa Kemal Ataturk turned Hagia Sophia into a museum in 1934. The building is a World Heritage site, is truly enormous and an architectural wonder which has survived since 537 AD, despite being in an area that is prone to earthquakes.

On 10 July 2020, by order of the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the building will again become a Mosque.

The move is seen by some groups, including Christians, Greece, the US and UNESCO as being controversial. The building had been a Mosque for 500 years and a Christian church for almost 900.

The interior may be slightly familiar to film enthusiasts. In the 1963 James Bond Film "From Russia with love" Sean Connery was filmed here.
