Summary

[edit]
Description The Royal Navy trials cruiser HMS Cumberland (C57) in the English Channel on her return to Devonport on 28 September 1955, after anti-atomic warfare tests off Malta. The picture shows water sprays fitted around the ship thoroughly washing the decks and superstructure, a method of protection known as "pre-wetting", which would be used in war, to keep ships operating in the "fall-out" area, or outer fringes of a region affected by an atomic explosion, free of radioactive particles.
