[edit]DescriptionHIS LARGE EPITAPH... (7038249463).jpg |
"The Bodleian Library takes its name from Sir Thomas Bodley (1545-1613) whose initials appear in the inscription over the entrance to the Proscholium, on the west face of the Old Schools Quadrangle: QUOD FELICITER VORTAT ACADEMICI OXONIENSIS BIBLIOTHECAM HANC VOBIS REIPUBLICAEQUE LITERATORUM T(HOMAS). B(ODLEY). P(OSUIT). Thanks to Google for leading me to the translation: "Academicians of Oxford! Thomas Bodley has built this library for you and for the Republic of the Learned. May the gift turn out well" The Bodleian is one of the oldest libraries in Europe, founded in 1602 and at the last count had over 80 miles of shelves and in excess of 11m books. Its a British copyright library and by law is offerred a copy of every book published in the UK (according to Wykipedia the volume for 2005, the latest year for which figures are available, 206,000 titles were published in Britain!). In 1638, Henry Vaughan a surviving contemporary of Sir Thomas Bodley wrote of his library: "Thou has made us all thine heirs; whatever we Hereafter write, tis thy posterity. This is thy monument here thou shalt stand Till the times fail in their last grain of sand. And whosoever thy silent reliques keep, This tomb will never let thy honour sleep, Still we shall think upon thee; all our fame Meets here to speak one letter of thy name: Thou canst not die! Here thou art more than safe, Where every book is thy large epitaph. |
