Text Appearing Before Image:
partly female (mammse and pubic hair) andpartly male (hair on legs and upper lip). the convenience of retaining it in use must in the meantime outweighthe desire for terminological exactitude. It will be recollected that in a normally developed man the essentialfemale sex-organs, with the exception of the gonads, are represented inthe form of vestigial structures ; thus the hydatid testis represents theremains of the Miillerian duct, and the prostatic utricle, the uterus.Again, in the normally developed female are to be found the epoophoronand paroophoritic tubules representing epididymis and paradidymis, HERMAPHRODITISM AND PSEUDOHERMAPHRODITISM 169 the clitoris representing the phallus, and the clitoridian folds repre-senting the foreskin. The sex having been determined by the forma-tion of an ovary or testis, in very early embryonic life, it is obviousthat an aberrant coiu-se of later development might furnish theindividual with some or all of the minor organs of the opposite sex.
Text Appearing After Image:
Fig. 95. A Case of Male Pseudohermaphroditism, showing theExternal Genitalia of the Female Type. (Martin.) The arrangement may be still further complicated by the well-known tendency of malformations to be multiple ; combined malforma-tions of the external and internal genitals are quite exceptionallyfrequent. The effect of certain of these malformations is to cause theexternal genitalia to assume the outward appearances of those of theopposite sex. Thus hypospadias in the male is brought about by non-union of the lateral halves of the penile urethra and of the scrotum ; theresult is that the separated halves of the scrotum resemble the labiamajora, and leave between them a space, upon the floor of which opensthe urethra. The penis is imperfectly developed and of small size. Ifnormally descended testes were present there would be little difficulty inrecognizing the malformation, for the glands would be felt in theapparent labia. Frequently, however, non-descent of the testes is 170 GY
