Summary
[edit]DescriptionGullery, Burn Fell - geograph.org.uk - 770689.jpg |
English: Gullery, Burn Fell The area is the breeding ground to thousands of Gulls, mostly Lesser Black Backed. One estimate in the late 1990s put 10% of the British population nesting here. I tried to avoid them as they were quite threatening. Watching for swooping gulls and trying to avoid stumbling in thick heather is not to be recommended. I would avoid the Wolfhole Crag area in the breeding season. The gulls breed here because shooting management has reduced the numbers of land based predators. Ironically the gulls take Grouse chicks. There have also been concerns about drinking water contamination from these colonies. |
