Les Aïnous constituent une importante population aborigène du Japon. Ils ont migré dans les îles du nord de l'archipel 1000 ans avant le peuple de Wa venu de Corée et qui est l'ancêtre des japonais actuels. Les Aïnous étaient des pêcheurs et des chasseurs, de religion animiste. L'ours était l'entité la plus vénérée. Les japonais les ont longtemps considérés comme des sauvages arriérés, ils ont été repoussés dans l'île d'Hokkaido et forcés de s'assimiler à la culture japonaise. Leurs droits sont aujourd'hui partiellement reconnus.

Dans la société traditionnelle aïnoue, les hommes arrivés à un certain âge ne se rasaient plus et leur pilosité devenait conséquente.
