Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 1.8-2.2 m; Height: 1.2-1.4 m; Weight: 159-227 kg; Identification: The coloration of the waterbuck varies from yellowish-brown to grayish-black. Some individuals have a white ring around their rump or a white rump patch. Their ears are tipped with black, and males have large, ringed horns; Habitat: Savannas, woodlands, stony hills, near water; Diet: Herbivore: young grasses; Reproduction: A single calf is born after a gestation period of nine months; Social Structure: Herds of up to 25 animals may form, including a master bull, females, and their calves. Young males form bachelor herds; Behavior: Waterbucks are water-loving rather than water-dwelling. However, when alarmed, the waterbuck will make for the nearest water, either a stream or a marsh; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: The most common predators of the defassa waterbuck are lions, leopards, and hunting dogs. They are not hunted by humans because their skins and meat are very oily. Waterbucks are also classified as Kobus ellipsiprymnus. |
