Description

Eentje uit het archief.

Why the name "De Boogjes"? "The Arches in English" In the past, the city wall stood on this spot. On the outside of the wall there were curved masonry arches with a closed back wall (the actual wall). In (below) these arches lived people or were small nations set up .. Usually the people were families. These people were among the poorest of the poorest. As a common man you did not have city rights and you could not just be in the city. You were not a citizen of the city. You were stopped in front of the city gate. And the merchants? Mostly they had to go outside again in time.

Very different from now.
