Description
Français : Grosse Horloge à La Rochelle (17), face sud côté Pérot. A ne pas confondre avec le Gros-Horloge de Rouen !

La porte originelle apparait au XIIe, et fait partie de la 1ère enceinte médiévale de la cité. Elle perd toutefois rapidement sa fonction défensive mais non son rôle de voie de communication, lorsque le port est agrandi et modernisé. Des invasions sont toujours redoutées par l'océan !

Son apparence a beaucoup évolué au fil des siècles:

. fin XVe l'horloge et sa cloche sont installés, sur demande des Rochelais;

. en 1672 les deux ouvertures du bas, respectivement dédiées aux piétons et attelages, sont réunies;

. vers 1745 enfin, c'est toute la partie supérieure qui est reprise; l'édifice perd à cette occasion ses toits en poivrière.
