Deutsch: Die Tropfsteinhöhle in Griffen befindet sich innerhalb des Schlossberges. Entdeckt in den letzten Monaten des 2. Weltkrieges wurde sie 1956 für Besucher freigegeben.
Die Stalaktiten und Stalagmiten wurden 1957 zum Naturdenkmal erklärt. Knochenfunde beweisen die Existenz von Höhlenbären, Riesenhirsch und Wollnashorn. Durch den Fund von zwei Feuerstellen konnte nachgewiesen werden, dass das Gebiet zu den ältesten menschlichen Ansiedlungen Kärntens gehört. Die Griffener Höhle gilt als die bunteste Tropfsteinhöhle Österreichs.English: The Griffen Limestone Caves are located beneath Griffen's Schlossberg (Castle Mountain). Discovered during the final months of World War II, they were first opened up to visitors in 1956. Its Stalactites and Stalagmites were officially recognised as natural monument in 1957.
The discovery of bone remains have proven that a number of long-extinct species, including the Cave Bear, the Giant Dear and the Woolly Rhinoceros, all once made these caves made their home. A number of fires show that the caves were once the site of one of the earliest human settlements in Carinthia. With a rich variety of colour, the Griffen Caves are the most colourful Limestone Caves in Austria. |
