Summary
[edit]DescriptionGreyfriars Kirk - geograph.org.uk - 1657706.jpg |
English: Greyfriars Kirk Greyfriars Kirk stands on the site of the former garden of a fifteenth century Franciscan friary. Greyfriars was officially opened on Christmas Day 1620, and witnessed the signing of the National Covenant on 28 February 1638. The subscription of this historic document precipitated years of upheaval and conflict, and Greyfriars was not immune to these forces, when it was wrecked whilst being used as a barracks during the Cromwellian occupation in 1650. Reconstruction followed in 1718 when the tower was destroyed after a gunpowder explosion. |
