Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Greenway Almshouses, Gold Street, Tiverton, Devon, built in 1517 by the Tiverton wool merchant John Greenway (d.1529). Above the doorway of the porch are sculpted the arms of Henry Courtenay, 1st Marquess of Exeter (1498–1539), Knight of the Garter, of Tiverton Castle, then lord of the manor of Tiverton, and his heraldic badge of the "Courtenay falcon and faggot". His arms are circumscribed by the Garter. On the cornice on top of the porch are escutcheons with monograms including "JG" and coats of arms of the Worshipful Company of Drapers, of which Greenway was a member, which arms also appear inside the Greenway Porch of St Peter's Church, Tiverton, also built by Greenway in 1517.
