Summary
[edit]DescriptionGreenish welded tuff (Tertiary; Blue Point Quarry, Jawbone Canyon, Kern County, California, USA) 16.jpg |
English: Volcanic tuff from the Tertiary of California, USA.
Volcanic tuffs are solidified ash deposits - they form by explosive volcanic eruptions, as do volcanic breccias. Volcanic tuffs are supposed to lack an abundance of large, angular grains. Tuffs are fine-grained to very fine-grained ash deposits that have become lithified. The degree of lithification varies. Some ash beds remained so hot after initial deposition that the heat was sufficient to self-solidify the beds. Such deposits are called welded tuffs. Some welded tuffs have glassy cores, where the ash was heated past the melting point after deposition (for example, the famous Late Miocene-aged Resting Spring Pass Tuff east of Shoshone in eastern California, USA). The example seen here is a Tertiary-aged welded tuff from California. The greenish color has been attributed to copper impurities. It comes from a quarry that mined this material for use as roofing granules. Locality: Blue Point Quarry, Jawbone Canyon, Kern County, southern California, USA Info. at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuff |
