[edit]DescriptionGreat Victoria Street - Geograph-3388719-by-The-Carlisle-Kid.jpg |
English: Steam train - No. 2 Platform - Great Victoria Street station Preserved former GNR(I) S-Class 4.4.0 No. 171 "Slieve Gullion" prepares to depart from Great Victoria Street station with the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland "Ardee" railtour - the last steam train out of the old GNR(I) station. There is much of interest in this (not very good) photograph - at left, the Europa Hotel appears to be under repair following (probably) another bomb attack. To the right of No. 171 can just be seen a UTA built spoil wagon, initially used to convey building materials for construction of the M2 Motorway, but by 1975 in use for transporting railway ballast. Then there is a BREL built "Enterprise" Mk2b coach - likely BDSO 811 or 812, and a brake-van used on PW duties. The final two coaches in the traditional carriage sidings appear to be former steam hauled stock converted to railcar trailers. The now demolished "Erinmore" tobacco factory seems to have erected crude screens to prevent windows being broken by stone-throwers on the Boyne Bridge. |
