Description

NPS/Patrick Myers

One of the most majestic and magnificent North American birds, Great Blue Herons are sometimes seen in the grasslands and wetlands of Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. These tough shorebirds will often stay in the San Luis Valley into late fall, even when nighttime temperatures drop into the single digits.

Herons are masters at catching anything they can fit in their beak, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, and even small birds and mammals. Strong necks with extra flexible vertebrae allow them to strike quickly from a distance, and they can hunt day or night due to the presence of extra photoreceptors in their large eyes.

Great Blue Herons are another surprising species in a national park known for sand dunes. Take time during your next visit to explore beyond the dunefield, and expect the unexpected!
