English: Gravestone of Maria de Rijke at Sint Anna Termuiden
  • The carved figures near the top of the stone hint at why Maria de Rijke became well known in the western part of Zeeland. Her promising professional career was cut short in 1939 as the result of a medical accident involving x-ray equipment which cruelly damaged her face. Various legal hearings ensued and her situation captured media attention. She received some compensation: nevertheless, for her final fifty or so years she lived in poverty in an inceasingly derelict cottage beside a dyke just outside Sint Anna Ter Muiden. Her existence was increasingly isolated: she was not welcoming to human visitors. Instead she made her home into a refuge for underprivileged and/or otherwise homeless dogs and cats.
