Upon completion the Grand Coulee Dam was the most massive concrete gravity dam in the world. It is not anchored to the unlying river bedrock in any way; thus remaining in place only by the sheer weight of the iron rebar reinforced concrete superstructure used to construct it. It blocks and holds back the waters of the mighty Columbia River at a point that is more than a mile wide. To this day it produces enough electricity to supply the needs of two cities the size of Seattle, Washington.
