Planting of sentry milk-vetch seeds at Maricopa Point on July 3, 2012 is the latest step in Grand Canyon National Park’s effort to recovery the park’s only species of endangered plant. Sentry milk-vetch (Astragalus cremnophylax var. cremnophylax), grows only in three locations on the South Rim. The plant is at risk of extinction because it requires shallow soils within a few feet of the canyon’s rim which limits its available habitat. NPS photo. This planting took place adjacent to the existing population near Maricopa Point. Vegetation crews from the Division of Science and Resource Management are testing different watering regimes to see how they impact seed germination and plant survival. The plots are color coded for the different watering treatments. Seeds in the blue groups are kept moist by frequent watering and orange group seeds receive only natural precipitation. The data from this project will be used to help plan future recovery actions for this species.
