Description

Saturday, October 13, 2012. Railroad motorcars, or speeders, departing the historic Grand Canyon Railroad Depot on the South Rim of the park. This excursion was sponsored by Motorcar Operators West, under a special use permit issued by the park. NPS video.

These little cars were once used by railroad crews to inspect tracks and switches, and to move crews between job sites. In the 1990s, most speeders were replaced with pickup trucks (or SUVs) fitted with wheels that could run on the tracks. (road-rail vehicles.) At the present time, speeders are refurbished by hobbyists, who take them on excursions.
