Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Governor's House, Calton Gaol Not a castle on the Rhine, but what still stands of the Calton Gaol which replaced the inadequate Tolbooth in the High Street. It was begun in 1808 and opened in 1817. The Governor's House, designed by Archibald Elliot, was added in 1815. The advocate and judge, Henry, Lord Cockburn thought that "It was a piece of undoubted bad taste to give so glorious an eminence to a prison". The gaol closed in 1925 and, apart from the Governor's House, was demolished in 1937 to make way for the building of St Andrew's House.
