English: Ashoka Pillar at Gotihawa in Kapilvastu District. Some distance from Taulihawa, the district headquarters of Kapilvastu district, is near the ancient site Kudan. The site was first explored in the 1890s, and was partially excavated in 1898 by Major Wadelavda at the stupa. Some earlier archaeologists believed that the monument indicated the birthplace of the former Buddha Krakuchhanda.
The stupa was re-excavated in the 1990s by Italian archaeologist Giovanni Verardi, who identified the stupa as having two levels. The earliest stupas were 19.5 m in diameter and were mostly carved in rectangular and triangular bricks in a descending order. Later, the stupa was expanded to 21.5 m in diameter using only rectangular spaces. Verardi attributes the first builder of the stupa to Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BC and mentions that the stupa was expanded during the Kushan period between 100 BC and 300 AD. Excavations have revealed the fact that people have been living in this place since before the stupa was built. Carbon dating dates to 800 BC, and the discovery of rented pieces of early northern black polished ware indicates that the site is as contemporary as Lumbini village in 1300 BC. Due to the freezing of water in this place, most of the stupa is underground. The pillars are surrounded by iron bars to secure them. There is a small door for the devotees to reach the pillar. |
