Text Appearing Before Image:
Fig. 88. No such whimsy diverted the architect of the nave atLincoln (Plate LXVI I) who worked with a surer hand andwith a magnificent result. It seems to have been begun byBishop Hugh of Wells 1209—1235 and finished in thetime of the great Bishop Grostete who died in 1253.The lightness of the structure is remarkable, and accordingto Mr Penrose the proportion of void to solid in theplan is greater than in any large vaulted building inEurope. The piers are clustered, surrounded by marblecolonnettes, the central column being in most cases ofmarble as well. The bays are very wide, scaling on thepublished plans about 27 feet from centre to centre ofthe columns, which as the nave is 40 feet wide gives
Text Appearing After Image:
CH. XIl) EARLY ENGLISH 21 I an air of great spaciousness to this part of the building. LincolnThe vaults are quadripartite, and have ridge ribs and T^ntveextra intermediate ribs (Fig. 89) which from this time vaultplay an important part in English vaulting, and lead up,as will be explained hereafter, to a new principle ofvault-construction peculiar to this country. The outside elevation of this nave is perhaps the finestexample of vigorous and severe Early English work.
