DescriptionGorlebenNuclearWaste1.jpg |
English: Backside of the "loading station" near Dannenberg, district Lüchow-Dannenberg (Germany). In the building, there is a special crane to be the "Castor" containers – or containers of highly radioactive nuclear waste from other construction – transferred from the railway to lorries. (Before that they were brought here by train from the reprocessing plant at La Hague, France). From Dannenberg, the lorries are driven about 20 kilometers over country roads and pass through villages to the interim storage facility for German highly radioactive nuclear waste near Gorleben.
The twelfth "Castor" transport since 1995, consisting of eleven other nuclear waste containers, has reached Gorleben in November 2010. This increased the number of containers at the intermediate storage to 102. The transport was accompanied by massive protests of the local population and anti-nuclear activists from all over Germany, so it had to be enforced by 21,000 police officers.
