English: (1 in a multiple picture set) In 2005 I went back to my hometown and found one of my high school 'Class of 63' friends on his farm just north of Perkins, IA. He gave me a tour of his place and was especially proud of his corn crop. He told me something I never knew about this plant. The hundreds of silk threads that stick out the top of the ear of corn each run down to a separate kernal. These are the female organs. The brown tufts at the top are the male organs. There, that's your botany lesson for today. |
