Summary
[edit]DescriptionGolden Bracken (Pteridium) - geograph.org.uk - 587267.jpg |
English: Golden Bracken (Pteridium). Before the fronds turn brown > 587273 and die at the onset of winter, they display a palette of colours ranging from yellow and golden orange to red. Brackens belong to the family Hypolepidaceae, which can be found on all continents except Antarctica, and in all environments except for hot and cold deserts. Brackens are used as food plants by certain species of insects such as the larvae of Dot Moth, Gold Swift, Map-winged Swift, Orange Swift and Small Angle Shades. The plant is a known carcinogen to animals such as mice, and communities where the young stems are used as a vegetable (for instance in Japan and Korea) have some of the highest stomach cancer rates in the world
