Title
Gold Dobunnic stater
Description
English: Gold Iron Age stater of the Dobunni tribe / Western Region, dating to c. 60 BC - AD 43. 'Pershore' type. Obverse: Tree symbol (with 6 branches on left and 5 on right) with ring at base. Reverse: Triple-tailed horse right, eight-spoked wheel below; crescent and rings above; (zig-zag pattern about horse's head). ABC (Rudd), p. 103, no. 2006.

This issue is only known from three specimens found in the Pershore Hoard found in Worcestershire and acquired by the British Museum in 1996 (Hurst and Leins 2013, pp. 316-7, nos. 3-4 & 986). This coin shares the same obverse die with BM 1996 0736 3 (Hurst & Leins 2013, p. 316, no. 3), but it has a new reverse die. The provisional dating of the coin in ABC is 60-20 BC, but Chris Rudd does acknowledge that the coin might be a parallel issue to later, similar, types; hence, the date here extends up to AD 43.

The Pershore hoard publication is: D. Hurst & I. Leins, 'The Pershore Hoards & Votive Deposition in the Iron Age', Proceedings of the Prehistoric Society 79 (2013), pp. 297-325
