Summary
[edit]DescriptionGneiss (Cranberry Gneiss, Mesoproterozoic, 1.05 Ga; Appalachian Mountains, eastern USA) (49156274056).jpg |
Gneiss from the Precambrian of eastern USA. (public display, North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, Rayleigh, North Carolina, USA) Gneiss is a high-grade, foliated metamorphic rock. It forms principally by metamorphism of schist, granite, or granite-like rocks. The foliation in gneiss is obvious and consists of alternating bands of light and dark minerals. The light-colored component is usually quartz (SiO2). Geologic unit: Cranberry Gneiss, late Mesoproterozoic, 1.05 Ga Locality: unrecorded/undisclosed site in the Appalachian Mountains of eastern USA (possibly North Carolina) |
