Summary
[edit]DescriptionGneisenau Monument, bronze plaque.jpg |
English: The Gneisenau Monument at the English Cemetery in Málaga is a memorial and funerary monument dedicated to the memory of the 42 crew members who lost their lives when the Imperial German Navy ship Gneisenau went down in the bay of Malaga on December 16th 1900. The monument recreates with granite blocks rustically grouped the breakwater where the ship was shipwrecked. It has a bronze tombstone in its upper part with the names of the deceased sailors, and another marble one in its lower part which states that the remains of 8 crew members are resting there. The inscription reads: "Hier ruhen acht am / 16. dezember 1900 / in Málaga verungluckte / der besatzung S. M. S. Gneisenau" ("Here rest eight members of the crew of S. M. S. Gneisenau who died in an accident in Málaga on 16 December 1900").
