Summary

[edit]
Description

Gloster Meteor F8 (Prone Pilot), modified by Armstrong Whitworth with an additional cockpit for a prone pilot to test such a position, at the RAF Museum, Cosford, 8 July 2020. The original cockpit (with pilot) was retained as a safety measure.

The increasing performance of fighters at the end of WWII had placed great g-stresses on pilots and proposals for a British rocket fighter inspired by the German rocket fighters in the war led to the idea that a pilot in a prone position would be better able to cope with the stresses. However, trials with the modified Meteor revealed that the prone pilot could endure only a little extra g and that this was at the expense of severe vertigo; in addition, a pilot lying down simply couldn’t turn to see much backwards. All in all, it proved very tiring for the pilot whilst the problem of his escape from an aircraft in trouble was never solved. Unsurprisingly, the whole prone pilot idea was abandoned.
