Description

This is one end of the Hanging Lake tunnel, one of four tunnels within the canyon. This one is over a mile long. A hiking trail from the Hanging Lake Rest Area leads up to the lake itself, a wonder of nature all in itself.
This miracle of construction is fairly new, having been completed in 1992. It was one of the last pieces of our interstate system buil. Locals fought the idea of putting an interstate within the canyon, and only relented when the plans showed that every attempt was being made not to spoil this beautiful place.

As I looked at this picture in 2012, I noticed, for the first time, a train passing below the highway.
