| Description |
English: The picturesque small town of Gerri de la Sal lies in a remote mountainous part of the province of Lleida, Northern Spain, close to the Pyrenees Mountains.
It has a natural salt water spring which has been used for centuries as an important supply of salt (Sal is the Catalan word for salt). In the middle ages the town was very important for that reason. Nearby is the Santa María Monastery, which was founded in the year 807. The ruined monastery that's seen today was built in the 12th century in the Catalan Romanesque style, and was once the most important abbey in the Urgell bishopric - until it eventually closed in 1835. Now only the Church with the atrium or entrance porch remains but they are open to visitors. |
