Description

GERMAN LUTH CHURCH, CHESTERTON, IND.

Date: Circa 1910 Source Type: Postcard Publisher, Printer, Photographer: M. L. Photo Company (#14) Postmark: July 15, 1911, LaPorte, Indiana Collection: Steven R. Shook Remark: This church, which still stands [2021], is located at the southeast corner of the intersection of present day 3rd Street and Lincoln Avenue. Other than a change in the style of the steeple, the church today appears much as it does in this postcard photograph. Construction of this church began in October 1880 and it completed in mid-May of 1881. Nathan DeMass served as contractor and builder of the church.

The church was dedicated on Sunday, July 10, 1881, by Reverend Hammon of Otis, LaPorte County, Indiana, followed by a an immense picnic in Peterson's Grove that included a German band.
