Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Georgeham: Putsborough Sand and Vention. Vention is a corruption of ‘New Invention’, a reference to the lime kiln first built here in the 17th century. A later lime kiln and converted lime burner’s cottage survive today with a cluster of other buildings. Culm and limestone for the kiln was shipped in small sailing vessels from South Wales and unloaded on the beach. The burnt lime was used to neutralise the acidity in the local farmland
