"America's first modern highway" was originally constructed as a memorial to the first president connecting his home at Mount Vernon to Washington, D.C. It now stretches' about 25 miles long and is lined with park land featuring scenic views of nature, historic places, and monuments. The parkway runs across Columbia Island in D.C.
