Summary

[edit]
Description
English: From "DNA Sequencing Costs: Data from the NHGRI Large-Scale Genome Sequencing Program"

Accessed 11 December 2011.

This is the general cost across the industry for producing the sequence data for a human-sized genome.

Considerations have been made for the different amounts of sequencing (coverage) required for different sequencing technologies. Specifically, 6x for Sanger sequencing, 10x for 454, 30x for Illumina and SOLiD. Details of what was counted as "sequence production costs":

  • Labor, administration, management, utilities, reagents, and consumables
  • Sequencing instruments and other large equipment (amortized over three years)
  • Informatics activities directly related to sequence production (e.g., laboratory information management systems and initial data processing)
  • Shotgun library construction (required for preparing DNA to be sequenced)
  • Submission of data to a public database
  • Indirect Costs as they relate to the above items

See genome.gov/sequencingcosts for full assumptions used.
