Had the army of General Pakenhambeen successful, there is good reason tobelieve that England would have refused torelinquish the Mississippi, and the war wouldhave gone on, or peace would have beenmade with the mouth of the great riverunder the control of England. The victoryclosed the war, and was won as we shall seethree weeks after the treaty of peace wassip-ned. At sea the war was carried on by the fewAmerican cruisers that managed to eludethe blockade of our coast. The frigate Essex, Commodore Porter, went to seain 1813, and made a number of captures inthe Atlantic. Learning that the Britishwhalers, which had been armed for the pur-pose of capturing American vessels, engagedin the same trade, were doing considerabledamage in the Pacific, Commodore Portefsailed around Cape Horn and entered thaiocean.
