"Het Waterschap Groot-Haarlemmermeer
Kort na de droogmaking van het Haarlemmermeer is het waterschap "De Haarlemmermeerpolder" opgericht. Het waterschap De Haarlemmermeerpolder had als belangrijkste doel het beschermen van het gebied en de bewoners tegen overstromingen. Dit gebeurde door aanleg, beheer, en onderhoud van dijken en kaden. Daarnaast zorgde het waterschap ervoor dat er in het gebied niet teveel en niet te weinig water was en dat het water niet te zout was. Tot op de dag van vandaag is dit de
belangrijkste taak van het in 1979 ontstane waterschap "Groot-Haarlemmermeer".
Het hoofdgemaal waar u nu voor staat is gebouwd vanwege de vele infrastructurele veranderingen in de Haarlemmermeerpolder.
Deze veranderingen vragen voortdurende aanpassingen van de waterhuishoudkundige voorzieningen in de polder en dus ook de bouw van dit derde hoofdgemaal. De twee andere hoofdgemalen zijn "De Lynden" en "De Leeghwater". Met gemaal "Koning Willem I" wordt de bemalingscapaciteit met 600 m3 per minute uitgebreid tot een totale capaciteit van 2100 m3 per minute. Dit in 2002
gerealiseerde gemaal heeft de naam van Koning Willem I gekregen vanwegen zijn belangrijke rol bij de droogmaking van het Haarlemmermeer."
