Il ya même, tout au premier plan de cette composition, une femme accroupie près dune chèvre qui pourrait faire craindre que le pinceau de M. Puvis de Chavannes ne se laisse entraîner à une manière lourde et noire. Sauf la tache que nous signalons, la couleur générale se tient avec assez de bon-heur dans les tons clairs et lins de la fresque. Et toutefois laspect lai-teux des chairs de femmes nous rappelle encore trop quelles sont sorties dun atelier où lon met volontiers sa gloire à peindre de gigantesques pierrots. La fresque et la détrempe peuvent prétendre à une couleur plusvraie, plus voisine de la nature; elles ont su en dautres mains trouver,dans lemploi des ocres, des tons ambrés dune étoffe plus riche et plusdouce à lœil.
