Je rappellerai seulement la répliquede Paris, datée de 1529 (n° 98, catalogue de 1867), et celle de la galerieBorghèse à Rome qui, dans mes souvenirs, est supérieure à celle delErmitage. Les deux portraits de Frédéric le Sage et dune Jeune Princesse deSaxe forment pendants. Pour le premier, le livret prévient que « desportraits semblables sont conservés dans les galeries de Vienne, deDresde, de Darmstadt et de Weimar ». Il eût pu ajouter à cette nomen-clature le Louvre, où lon voit un Portrait de Frédéric le Sage, datéde 1522 (n° 99 du catalogue de 1867); le second, une Jeune Priticesse,est daté de 1526. Chacune de ces œuvres offre un intérêt incontestable au point de vuede lhistoire de lart allemand, encore si peu connu en France. Quant aumérite artistique, jy suis peu sensible. Jai sans doute tort. Sans parler de celui du Louvre, une des merveilles du saloncarré, la galerie de Hampton-Gourt, le Belvédère de Vienne, la Kuntshallede Carlsrhue en possèdent de fort beaux et de fort authentiques. Celui delErmitage est de demi-grandeur. Érasme est vu à mi-corps, -vêtu dunerobe noire garnie de fourrure, coiffé dun bonnet noir; il appuie unemain sur un livre relié en parchemin jauni posé sur une table. Quoiqueusée, la peinture conserve encore ce mélange de précision et de fermetésans sécheresse qui caractérise le talent de Holbein. Barthélémy Brûyn mérite dêtre plus connu. Par son exécution fine,précieuse et fluide, il rappelle les vieux maîtres flamands, et surtoutJean de Mabuse, dont on le dit lélève; par le sentiment de la réalitédont il anime ses personnages, il se rapproche de Holbein, à qui sesœuvres sont souvent attrib
