En la década de 1880, el pintor modernista catalán Ramon Casas había ensayado ya la representación de escenas de multitudes en obras como 'Entrada a la plaza de toros de Madrid' o 'Las regatas'. Tras un período en el que predominan sus composiciones retratísticas y de desnudos, vuelve a retomar el motivo de los acontecimientos multitudinarios, entre los que ocupa lugar preeminente Garrote vil. El propio pintor presenció la escena de este ajusticiamiento, de Aniceto Peinador, que tuvo lugar en Barcelona en 1893, pero al llevarlo al lienzo, no insiste en los aspectos morbosos inherentes al tema, enfatizando más bien sobre el matiz de crónica periodística del acontecimiento. Casas realizó dos estudios preparatorios para esta obra, en la que se divisan en segundo plano las chimeneas de las industrias barcelonesas del barrio del Raval. El motivo principal se centra en la muchedumbre que aparece retratada desde un punto de vista alto, agrupada en torno al cadalso, en el que se sitúan el verdugo, el reo y los sacerdotes. También participan en la escena los Cofrades de la Sangre con sus característicos capirotes. Entre el acusado y la multitud expectante, Casas introduce un espacio vacío, que contribuye a potenciar la tensión y el dramatismo sobre el grupo protagonista de la escena. |
