Gao Gao the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) gazes right at me at the San Diego Zoo in San Diego, California. The giant panda is a bear native to subalpine tropical bamboo forests of central- and south-western China. In 2007, there were 266 captive pandas, with another 1,600 in the wild. Due to habitat loss, it is highly endangered. Adult pandas are 4 to 6 feet long, 1'10" to 2'10" inches tall at the shoulder. Males weigh about 350 pounds, with females about 10 to 20 percent smaller. The giant panda has large molars and strong jaw muscles for crushing tough bamboo. The giant panda has five fingers, plus a "thumb." This is actually a wristbone embedded in tendons and muscle that is designed to help the panda hold bamboo while eating. The giant panda typically lives around 20 years in the wild. Gao Gao ("Big Big" in Mandarin) was born in the wild in 1992, but injured as a cub. Most of his left ear is missing. Rescued and treated, he proved disruptive to local villages and was put in a zoo. He was loaned to the San Diego Zoo in 2003. He's fathered five offspring! |
