Summary
[edit]DescriptionGandhak ki Baoli, Mehrauli 2.jpg |
English: Located not very far away from Adam Khan's tomb, the baoli won't be visible until the recently put red plaque flashes in a speck in front of you.
Built in 13th century by Iltutmish for the sufi saint Qutbuddin Bakhtiar Kak, who was one of the handful sufi saints to have taken the Chishti order beyond Rajasthan and Gujarat, it is smaller compared to Rajon Ki Baoli, a Lodi era stepwell not very far, and the environs are in contrast, the latter being in the green, although slum patched, scape of Mehrauli Archaeological Park, while this one lies in the heart of Mehrauli, in front of a Pahalwan ka Dhaba. The water here has a high content of sulphur hence 'Gandhak' ki Baoli. The element is the secret behind its curative properties, for which Kak sa'ab would have had the fame in his prime. But what really made my day was watching people actually bathing. The water level was decent, and although not very clean, it does provide a reprieve in the summers, a haven for all the seers and 'pirs' whi would find public utilities a tad too different for their taste. Better access would surely help, but hearing the cool water echo and splash, aah, darn everything for that 'dawny' moment o' joy.
