Português: No navio de Bartolomeu Perestrelo, que em 1419 navegou para a ilha do Porto Santo com a missão de a povoar, seguia "uma coelha prenha metida numa gaiola que pelo mar acertou parir".
Uma vez na ilha, o objectivo era que os coelhos a povoassem e servissem de alimento aos colonizadores. Mas a sua multiplicação foi tal que era impossível cultivar a terra. Roíam tudo, dizia João de Barros. Também Charles Darwin se interessou pelos famosos coelhos do Porto Santo. No livro A Variação dos Animais e das Plantas sob Domesticação, o pai da teoria da evolução pela selecção natural dizia que os coelhos do Porto Santo resultaram de animais já domesticados. Mas Darwin estava errado, como mostraram os estudos genéticos do Centro de Investigação em Biodiversidade e Recursos Genéticos, no Porto. Os estudos genéticos também concluíram que toda a população actual de coelhos do Porto Santo descende de um só casal. |
