Rückseite: LIBERT - AVG -/ R - XL. Libertas steht nach l. Sie hält in ihrer r. vorgestreckten Hand eine Freigelassenenkappe (pileus) und in ihrer l. Hand einen Stab (vindicta). Beiderseits S - C. Kommentar: Die Attribute der Libertas, pileus und vindicta, sind der Zeremonie der Sklavenfreilassung entnommen. In der Kaiserzeit ist die Libertas oft als Zeichen des Endes der tyrannischen Herrschaft des Vorgängers zu deuten. In der Münzprägung Galbas spielt sie eine besonders wichtige Rolle betont sie doch die Befreiung des römischen Volkes von der Schreckensherrschaft des Nero durch Galba. Der Zusatz R XL auf der Rückseite muss wohl zu remissa quadragesima aufgelöst werden und bezieht sich auf die Steuererlässe des Galba für die Provinzen. Deshalb erscheint er eigentlich ausschließlich auf Münzen des Galba, die in Gallien und Spanien geprägt wurden, was zu Spekulationen über den Prägeort dieser Sesterzen führte.
