Summary
[edit]DescriptionFrom the Archives The Clockworks Counterweight at Split Rock Lighthouse (6791228242).jpg | Split Rock Lighthouse still has the original clockworks mechanism that was used to turn the giant lens in the lantern room. It is ver much like a giant grandfather clock. There is a column that extends down the center of the tower of the lighthouse and inside that tower is a large set of counterweights. It is gravity tugging on these weights that undwinds the steel cable, which turns the clockworks, which turns lens. This photo shows a glass window that looks into the column and is one of the ways that the keepers could tell that it was time to wind the clockworks. It takes about two hours for the weight to fall from the top of the lantern to the bottom of the tower. |
