Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Fresh Water Supply! This large stone appears to mark the sight of a water tank providing fresh water to the local inhabitants from The Binn well, carried in leadden pipes. It is dated 1802-1803. It is difficult today to imagine life in an expanding town at a time when the only water available was presumably from streams, rainwater or perhaps over-used wells. The fact that this large stone was erected at the time suggests how significant it was then to have fresh water available for local people, albeit by carrying it home by hand!
