Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Frederick W. Zabel House, 44 Allenhurst Road, Buffalo, New York, April 2021. A good representative example of the typical 1910s, '20s, and '30s-era housing stock in the University Park Historic District, this two-story, wood-frame, brick-veneered residence sports modest Tudor Revival-style detailing that's best exemplified by the roof, where an asymmetrical front gable is appended to a side-oriented main gable and undergirded by an entrance portico whose round arches, along with the soffit returns on the roof gables, represent an odd juxtaposition of Classical influences. A meat cutter by trade, Frederick William Zabel (1871-1938) plied his trade at various locations in the city over the years: he kept stalls in the Elk Street, Chippewa, and Broadway Markets and later owned a standalone shop on Eagle Street. He lived in the house from its completion in 1928 until his death, and his widow Clara remained there until her own death four years later.
