DescriptionFred C Palmer Uffington 1929 001 (cropped to square).jpg |
Postcard of St Mary's parish church, Uffington, Oxfordshire, England, showing the octagonal tower. At the time of the photograph, Uffington was in Berkshire, but county borders have now changed. The photographer was Fred C. Palmer of Tower Studio, Herne Bay, Kent ca.1905-1916, and of 6 Cromwell Street, Swindon ca.1920-1936. He is believed to have died 1936-1939. The card is addressed to Miss Bessie Knight of Carisbrooke (now on Marine Parade), Littlestone, Kent, a holiday town for gentry, but the address has been forwarded to 6 John (Street?), Mayfair, London, in a different hand. The writer of the card, who signs himself "Brad", is on holiday in Uffington. He sends love to Bessie, but has already received a letter saying that she is "gone". Because the postcard has survived in near-perfect condition for 80 years until 2010, it is possible that she kept the postcard. The printing ink of the photograph has aged, and shines silver when held at an angle against the light. This print has darkened with age, but it would be inappropriate to adjust the brightness because detail, e.g. clouds in the sky, would be lost. Border |
