Title
Fragment of the terminal of a post-medieval copper alloy spur arm
Description
English:

Fragment of the terminal of a post-medieval copper alloy spur arm. The piece is flat in cross section and consists of D-shaped finial pierced by two holes for attaching the spur to leather straps. Projecting from the straight side of the D-shape is a short narrow waisted section followed by two transversely projecting lobes, one on each side. Finally, there is a bifurcation and two narrow limbs project at opposing oblique angles, before terminating in worn breaks. From other known examples of this kind of spur terminal we can say that these limbs were once part of an openwork triangle.

The piece is decorated with two linear transverse grooves, one between the oblique limbs and the transverse lobes, and the other on the D-shaped finial, between the flat edge and the two holes. There are also short grooves around the curved edge, probably intended to create a scalloped effect, although this has mostly been lost due to wear. The outer edges of the holes show clear signs of wear and indicate that the strap attachments were pulling at opposing oblique angles, as would be expected. 17th century.

More complete examples on this database include NMS-4D3753 and LANCUM-D569A3.  A complete spur with these terminals is also recorded: WMID-27A6E4.
